Articles from a Layperson’s Perspective on the implications of Super Intelligence, and his Protocols for Preparing for It.

Introduction

The technological singularity: a hypothetical future point at which technological growth, driven by artificial intelligence that surpasses human intelligence, accelerates beyond human control, resulting in unforeseeable changes to human civilization.

I am a Gen Z layperson interested in the philosophical and societal implications of artificial / super intelligence. I am making content to share my thoughts and protocols. My objective in this is to add positively to the discussion on this advancing technology, and hopefully help people feel more educated and prepared for it. For now I have chosen to go by the alias Singularity Layperson.

I am going to avoid giving advice on this blog. I will simply list my reasoning for why I believe what I believe, why I do what I do, and why I use what I use. If that changes, I will provide updates.

On the Eve of Superintelligence: Four Pillars for the Layperson

To the layperson, the advancement of artificial intelligence is something they have little to no technical understanding of. Yet all over the news and all over social media, artificial intelligence is touted as the next “big thing.” The next major societal shift and change—the largest and most spectacular civilizational shift since the Industrial Revolution. There are those known as transhumanists and/or futurists who see artificial intelligence as the next evolution in what it means to be human. A shift from homo sapiens to homo techno. An increasing merge between the relationship of human and machine.

To some this is an inspiring future; to others, dystopian. Some say this shift should be sought after and accelerated. Some say that we should do everything we can to stop the advancement of this technology. Some are uncertain, or hold a view somewhere in between. Regardless, it is obvious that the advancement of artificial intelligence will be big. How does the layperson attempt to prepare themselves for something which they have no understanding of? How do we prepare for what is called “The Singularity”?

Artificial intelligence is a tool that can be used for good, or for evil. It is being used by companies to enhance the appeal of their products—food companies, social media companies, technology companies, military contracting companies, and more. The people in these companies use these tools to try to create more profit for themselves and to advance their own interests. The long-term best interest of the consumer is not always prioritized.

What are the principles, tactics, strategies, and tools that consumers can use to protect themselves from products and algorithms designed to addict them? To profit by providing them short-term appeal but long-term decay? I think each of us has a responsibility to educate ourselves, but sometimes it’s hard to even know where to start. That is the objective of this article—to share what I’ve chosen to prioritize on the eve of superintelligence, and my reasoning for it.

As a layperson, I have adopted a four pillar practical framework: LEAP. Longevity, Environmentalism, Antifragility/Augmentation, and Privacy / Digital Sovereignty. I’m not an expert; this is how I’m thinking about it.

Longevity—I think it is possible that A.I. could enable medical discoveries that allow healthspan and lifespan to increase dramatically. Persons today could make it to 140, or 150, and have healthy years—potentially longer than that. That possibility is a big part of why I think longevity is worth paying attention to now.

Environmentalism—I care about our planet, and I think it matters to avoid unnecessarily polluting its air, its land, and its oceans.

Antifragility / Augmentation—I think it’s important to maintain and develop skillsets that allow us to exist without A.I. and be independent from it, and to teach our children these skillsets. Trade work, construction, and basic survival skills. Simultaneously, I see real value in using A.I. to make our lives more efficient.

Privacy / Digital Sovereignty—In preparation for superintelligent A.I., I’ve taken measures to educate myself on data protection, fraud protection, identity theft protection, and monetary self-sovereignty through cryptocurrency. I don’t believe in a tin foil hat approach to privacy in everything, but I see understanding it as a sensible hedge against dystopian levels of corporate or government surveillance.
